NAI Maestas & Ward promotes 26-year-old to director — youngest ever

Clayton King got the attention of the Albuquerque business community in the summer of 2014 when he stole the show a bit at a packed NAIOP-New Mexico luncheon event.

The motivated young professional introduced, to many for the first time, the spending power of the millennial demographic. He drove home the significance of their spending power and how that translates to commercial real estate — particularly retail.

About two years later, the 26-year-old has been riding a wave of success in commercial brokerage at NAI Maestas & Ward. King was recently promoted from senior advisor to director — the youngest ever in the firm’s history. He began his career at Maestas & Ward, where Debbie Harms is CEO, in late 2011. King was also one of the founding members of NAIOP-New Mexico’s developing leaders group.

How did you achieve this milestone promotion?

Staying dedicated and focused on my plan and vision. In today’s society, young professionals are constantly looking for a quick path to success. I can tell you that although technology has helped, it still comes down to hard work, persistence and dedication. In the commercial real estate business it is important to stay strategic and not become distracted by noise. I would also say that having a solid team and support helps all professionals. I am blessed to be surrounded by industry professionals that I can strategize with.

Commercial real estate in Albuquerque a good profession for a millennial?

I always tell other young professionals that commercial real estate brokerage is an acquired taste. This business has a tremendous barrier to entry, but if you break through the wall, the possibilities are endless. I tell people that as a commercial real estate broker I have constant exposure to other successful individuals and have the opportunity to learn how to build wealth every day.

Besides the Las Estancias project in the South Valley, what are you working on this year?

Las Estancias has been a tremendous part of my career. My partner Keith Meyer and I have had the opportunity to change the lifestyles of many Albuquerque residents that reside in the Southwest Mesa submarket. You will continue to see this project develop over coming years with exciting new retail. You will continue to see me mainly focus on national tenant representation. I have found this path in commercial real estate to be the most rewarding and fruitful. Eventually you will also see me involved in development projects throughout New Mexico.
