Family wants to keep Mudd Volleyball Tournament

A property that includes the site of the popular Carrie Tingley Hospital annual Mudd Volleyball Tournament is up for sale.

The Mudd Volleyball site is part of the 400-acre property that has been owned by the Schwartzman family since the early 1900s.

The mostly contiguous Schwartzman land runs along the northern side of Rio Bravo from the river to Broadway. The family has hired NAI Maestas & Ward to market the property. Steve Maestas, managing partner of Maestas & Ward, said the family would like to see the Mudd Volleyball event continue there.

“The family recognizes the established relationship with the Mudd Volleyball event,” he said. “They look forward to continuing that relationship.”

Meanwhile, he said the family has been interested in selling their 14 tracts of land for some time but wanted to make sure their vision for how it should be developed was part of those efforts.

“We’ve been able to orchestrate a plan that makes sense to the family,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to create jobs in the South Valley.”

The family, he said, envisions a “vibrant business” hub and has named the development the Schwartzman Commerce Center. It would include a mixture of retail stores, professional service, restaurants, manufacturing and entertainment. There is land set aside for a residential development, including a 120-acre tract that is close to the Rio Grande and has access to the bosque.

Maestas said the land’s close proximity to Interstate 25 and the rail line make it an ideal location for development and that there are already interested buyers.

According to a news release, Josef Schwartzman purchased 200 acres of the property in the early 1900s. His son, Joe Schwartzman, bought the rest in the 1930s.

The property has been used mostly for agricultural purposes since then, and the family has sold some of it in the past. The Albuquerque International Sunport, portions of I-25, the Rio Grande Federal Credit Union, a fire station and Lovelace Urgent Care all sit on what was once Schwartzman property.

Angela West, president of the Mountain View Neighborhood Association, said the association was aware of the family’s wish to sell the land and their vision for its development. She said the association has seen some preliminary plans.
